Architectural Diplomacy – by Diplomatic Pouch

In October, the difficult intercontinental journey of the Golden Trezzini statuette, which was awarded to winners from Brazil, came to a triumphant conclusion.

The year before last, the Golden Trezzini award in the ”Best Project of Private Residence” category was won by the Brazilian studio TETRO ARQUITETURA. Since the winners were unable to attend the award ceremony in person, the statuette was sent to them by mail. Unfortunately, the parcel faced administrative difficulties en route: it was first detained for a significant period and then returned to the sender by the Brazilian customs service.
Upon receiving the returned cargo, the award’s organizing committee turned to the Representation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Russian Federation in St. Petersburg for advice. As a result, upon the suggestion of the St. Petersburg representation, the Department for Multilateral Humanitarian Cooperation and Cultural Relations of the MFA made the decision to transmit the award to Brazil via diplomatic pouch. The statuette was sent from Moscow to the Russian Embassy in Brasília, and subsequently, an embassy representative personally delivered the award to the winners in the city of Belo Horizonte, state of Minas Gerais.
“It was extremely joyful to finally receive the 'Golden Trezzini' after such a long wait!” says Carlos Maia, lead architect at TETRO ARQUITETURA. “The embassy representative brought the award to us in Belo Horizonte himself, which made this moment even more memorable. We are grateful to the award organizers for making this possible and, with this gesture, once again confirming the power of architecture as a universal language.”
“We constantly speak about how the Golden Trezzini was invented to build ‘architectural diplomacy’. And now we have seen an example of how professional diplomats helped literally bring this idea to life,” notes Pavel Chernyakov, Chairman of the Awards Organizing Committee. “We have every reason to believe that this successful practice will be extended to the sending of statuettes to future foreign winners of the award.”

The “Golden Trezzini” Organizing Committee expresses its gratitude for their assistance to the Head of the Representation of the MFA of the Russian Federation in St. Petersburg and Co-Chairman of the International Council of the Golden Trezzini Awards, Maxim Poletaev; the Department for Multilateral Humanitarian Cooperation and Cultural Relations of the MFA of the Russian Federation and its Director, Alexander Alimov; as well as the members of the Russian diplomatic mission in Brazil.
